Sharp's Full Face 2 Cellphone Brings iNevitable Comparisons [IPhone Wannabe]

Softbank_FullFace_2%2090%20GI.jpgThe Full Face 2 reminds me of another phone but, in my humble opinion, Sharp's slim cell looks better from the front than the iPhone does. Beyond its appealing looks, however, it doesn't heat up the competition all that much. The display is a 3.2-inch multi-touch-less LCD (480 x 854), it has a 3.2MP camera, micro SDHC support, totes HSDPA, 1Seg TV tuner that will be all but useless in the States and will be available in either black, soft pink, champagne gold, white or ice blue. The Full Face 2 is a Japan-only release—I can't believe I got to put the words 'full,' 'face' and 'release' in the same sentence without making it naughty. Bravo, Sharp. [Akihabara News]

Canon HV30 Camcorder Improves on a Winning Formula, But Not By Much [Camcorders]

HV30left.jpgCanon has just updated last year's prizewinning HV20 camcorder and named it the HV30. Capable of shooting down to a low light level of 3 lux, the HV30 has improved noise suppression over the earlier model. With a 10x optical zoom, 2.7 inch viewfinder and a battery that can give 2 hours of shooting, it's no slouch, even if it has increasingly old-fashioned tape rolling away inside. So, what else is new?

Whereas the HV20 shot in 60i and 24p modes, the HV30 adds in a 30p mode which reduces motion blur. It also outputs video in HDV format to miniDV tape and 3 megapixel still images to miniSD card. Outputting type A HDMI component video, the HV30 has a USB connection, and its 3.4 x 5.4 x 3.2 inch body weighs 1.35 pounds when shooting. An optional battery pack extends the battery life to 4 hours.

Clearly Canon decided not to overly mess with the winning formula, so it may disappoint some that the upgrade doesn't seem to have much in the way of improvements. Apart from cosmetic adjustments like better-positioned controls and a different case profile, the only real change is the 30p mode. The HV30 will be available in Japan in early March for ¥110,000 ($1030). [Camcorderinfo and Av Watch]

Nokia acquires Trolltech -- the biggest little company you've never heard of

In a move meant to bolster its software development prowess, Nokia just announced the acquisition Trolltech. Who's Trolltech? Well, its software can be found in some 10 million devices. In fact, Trolltech's Qt is used by such familiar applications as Skype, Google Earth, and Photoshop Elements while their Qtopia was spotted on a hacked Archos 5 series earlier this month. By acquiring Trolltech's software development frameworks and application platforms, Nokia hopes to help developers create Internet applications that work on PCs and across Nokia devices. Specifically, Nokia claims that the move will "further increase the competitiveness of S60 and Series 40." The deal also grandfathers Nokia into the LiMo Foundation and its attempt to bring open-source to your handset. Hear that Android? The $153 million offer must still be processed through regulatory channels and approved by shareholders -- all expected before June in out.

Via's upcoming Isaiah chip can run Crysis

Sure, you might've napped through the marketing speak and blearily paged through the tech documentation, but apparently you haven't heard all there is to know about the new Isaiah architecture from Via. The folks at [H] Enthusiast got to see the chip in action, and were most impressed by the 1.8GHz bugger's ability to run Crysis. Apparently the folks at Via are fairly certain their chip can best the upcoming UMPC-friendly Silverthorn chips from Intel, and it seems like Crysis is about as good a benchmark as any. We're sure to hear more about this little rivalry in the coming months, but we like the way things are headed.

The Today Show's Meredith Viera licks the MacBook Air

There's nothing quite like hearing a group of network talk-show hosts heaping praise on a piece of technology they barely understand to jumpstart your day. We think you'll agree that listening to Matt Lauer loudly declare "It's awesome!" and watching Meredith "You're blowing the whole schtick" Viera vigorously mime licking the new MacBook Air is pretty wretch-inducing stuff -- though Al Roker informing us that if you want the SSD, you'll only have to pay "a little bit more," was definitely one toke over the line. Thanks for ruining our breakfast guys. Every breakfast.

Watch the video after the break. We've included the crew's earlier encounter with the iPhone just in case you needed your memory jogged.

700MHz "C" block receives $1.24 billion opening bid -- $3.36 billion to go for open-access

According to Reuters, the 700MHz "C" Block has received an opening bid of $1.24 billion. Unfortunately, a minimum bid of $4.6 billion is required to trigger the open-access rule. The rule which requires the victor to open that long-propagating and basement-penetrating spectrum to any and all mobile devices and software applications. It's so important that Google, Verizon, and others have been battling over it even before the FCC auction began. No worries, the auction has several weeks to go. If no one else steps up, Google is on-deck with that minimum bid.

Sharp's 46/42/37-inch AQUOS X series grabs world's thinnest title

In an odd yet titillating contest to offer the world's thinnest TV, Sharp just took gold. Their 34.4-mm (1.35-inch) thin LCDs comes in 46-, 42-, and 37-inch models. These lookers aren't just skinny though, they're dense as a product waif too. Each comes stuffed with a 120MHz panel offering a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast, 450 cd/m2 brightness, and 12-bit BDE color value rendering for smooth image quality. Add to it a 1-bit digital amplifier, 3-way 8-speaker system, and a vast suite of jacks including 3x 1080p HDMI 1.3a inputs, DVI for your PC, Ethernet, and Firewire and you'll seriously consider setting aside the dough for a new set when these hit Japan in March. How much? Nothing announced... but does it matter?

Nokia's 7900 Crystal Prism could be worse

Eww, it's back. Nokia's 7900 Crystal Prism is now really, extra-super official with a scheduled Q1 2008 launch for €375 (before taxes and subsidies). Besides sporting a slight redesign from that earlier pic, we now know that the 7900 packs WCDMA 2100/850 in addition to those quad-GSM bands, 2-inch OLED, and 2 megapixel CMOS camera. But really, this one's all about the look created by designer Frédérique Daubal. Yeah, us neither. "Renowned" enough for Nokia though, just not the 9.4 million pages of Wikipedia. See her "dress for tired people" after the break to see where this could have gone.
